Good morning everybody,

wow, I learn a lot reading everybody's stories. This program works if you follow it. It takes some time to find your groove (what works for you) and to readjust one's mindset about 'food'. I liked the success story Mark posted and this stuck with me: 'Looking at temptations as not real food.' I am 73 so losing weight takes more time, but it does happen!

12/19/19 weight is 185.4
12/26/19 weight is 185.2
01/02/20 weight is 184.6
01/10/20 weight is 183.6 - 1.0 lb

This past week I even dropped into the 182 # so I know that is coming. Lately I find myself eating less food. There's some mild hunger sometimes but it's more like a background noise and not something 'urgent' that has to be handled. I carry an apple with me for times when I think I must eat! Celery sticks are good too; I love to munch. My starches are rice but I rely mostly on potatoes. I am successful when I plan ahead and have a couple of meals prepared. Today I will again make the NY Times veggie burgers. They are filling. And buy another sack of potatoes! I just love to mash them with mashed carrots and I add peas and corn to it; could add beans too.
start weight 210 on 7/25/14; MWL recommit 7/2019 weight 197. 6/11/2022 weight 165.0. Height 5'8".

1/10/20: I'm down 5 pounds from last week.

42 pounds left to reach my target weight. The normal BMI range is my interim goal--it is about halfway to my final goal.

This coming week, I will concentrate on eating green salads, as I have been eating mainly starchy vegetables (or grains) plus fruit and an occasional soup. I had a pleasantly low/normal appetite this week. I am enjoying the food and do not miss the junk I used to crave or how it made me feel afterward.

The concern isn’t nixtamal (or wheat vs corn), the concern the calorie density of the food item “as consumed.”

Tortilla’s, which seem like the food you are making it into, are calorie dense so not recommend for MWL.

Height 5'4"
Starting weight 167 lbs on 1/1
Weight 159.9 on 1/10
Loss -7.1 lbs
Goal 135 lbs

What went right:
Made huge pot of oil-free soup (onions, carrots, celery, spinach, garlic, veggie broth, chickpeas, and Yukon potatoes). I ate on this all week and it was tasty and kept me filled. Also made 5 lbs of Yukon potatoes and 2 lbs of sweet potatoes in the instapot so I had those on hand as well. Only ate 2 pieces of fruit daily. Went out to eat once and ate a huge veggie salad with balsalmic vinegar. Didn't order beer even though I really wanted to!

Cheers, everyone! I will again (for the time being, anyway :) ) refrain from individual responses, other than in reply to specific questions or issues - just to keep the thread relatively tidy. Depending on how many reports we have by this evening, I will try to reach out to all of you in one combined post.

The day is off to an exciting start!
Reading through this mornings reports, I see a couple of major commonalities -

1) The MWL plan and 10-Point Checklist are quite effective, when we follow the principles.
2) Preparation and planning seem to be key to success, especially for those still battling cravings and temptations.

A couple of points in regard to calorie density -

Dry rolled oats are significantly more calorie dense and provide less satiety than oatmeal (which absorbs quite a bit of water if cooked in a 1:3 ratio). Dry oats are ~1700 calories/lb vs. oatmeal at about 300 calories/lb. Likewise, corn tortillas clock in at ~1000 calories/lb vs hominy at 327 calories/lb or yellow sweet corn at 368 calories/lb.

Oatmeal cooked in water and consumed 50/50 with fruit is a great breakfast for those who like to start the day with a sweeter dish. If you prefer savory, the SNAP meal is one excellent option. "Vegetables for breakfast" are fine, but be sure to include starch with the meal, as well.

Congratulations to everyone for your continuing mutual support, and for forging ahead!

Happy Friday everyone!

Down 3 lbs

Not totally compliant this week but a lot better than I have been over the past year. Focus right now is weekly meal planning.

2nd Weigh-In 1/10/2020:
-2 lbs (146 lbs)

Compliance with MWL has increased. Out of 21 meals this week, 16 were compliant (excepting use of salt/soy sauce) and 5 were not. Little to no exercise this week due to weather and life commitments.

Going forward into this next week, I would like to increase my compliant meal count to 18 out of 21 (at least) and get some sort of exercise at least 3 times.

I lost 1.6 pounds this week which is good since I’ve been on a plateau for so long. I don’t use this forum like I thought I would...for inspiration, ideas, knowledge etc...simply because it’s so difficult for me to figure out how to use it. The forum software (or whatever it’s based on) really needs to be updated. I waste a lot of time searching for how and where to do simple things, like posting!

Anyway, I’ll continue the month’s challenge to report my weight each Friday.

1/3/20 weigh in: 247.6
1/10/20 weigh in: 238.6

-9.0 lbs.

...all thanks to coming down with the flu tuesday and not eating anything since then! Once I'm feeling better, it'll be back to the principles!

I am trying to establish new healthy habits along with my weight loss. I am walking every day and trying for at least 10,000 steps. This past week I was able to do that everyday and I've adhered quite well to the the weight loss principles with a few fairly small exceptions (some dressing with a nut base once and no oil corn tortillas a couple of times).

This week I am down -1.2 lbs.
