Success

Postby Gypsy » Wed Apr 13, 2011 3:30 pm

I've been following the MWL plan with SNAP since the first of the year...about 3 months. I remember giving the cottage cheese and cheese to my daughter and she threw it out about the 2nd or 3rd week in January. Took her a few more days to throw out the olive oil.
I was desparate the last of the year...had gained 30 lbs last year...I knew that beans would hold me and was looking for recipes when I came across references to this site and the dear doctor.
I saw my doctor Jan 26 and he wanted to prescribe a new medication for my blood pressure, but it required lab work due to possible liver damage. What to do? Why couldn't he just refill the 2 generic Rxs that I had taking for years.? I had the lab work done prior to the new Rx and I was to return after a week of taking it.
I filled the Rx but never took it.
The nurse called all excited about my liver labs. Wanted me to come in, etc. I finally decided that I wouldn't take anymore meds, bought a b/p cuff and started monoriting my own pressure.
Next chapter: So I had to go in on April 8, 2011 for a different problem..planter warts. I figured he'd be upset that I had never returned after the first labs. But I presented him with my documentation of several weeks of B/P readings. He high fived me and said I had cured my own hypertention. But he was still concerned about the liver tests. So I had them repeated.
Here are the results:
Jan 26 ALT 51.7
AST 48.2
April 8 ALT 21.7
AST 22.5 Normal range for both 0.0 - 31.0
I can't wait to see him on Monday...he should be impressed. Oh, and I lost 30lbs since the first of the year. Thank you Dr. McDougall

Those results are just plain shockingly wonderful!!! What a difference the right food will make. Hope your doctor asks what you are doing to cure your problems....

Congrats!! Be sure to tell your doctor how you did it! I'm thinking about giving my doctor a copy of the MWL book and The China Study. I hate to spend $$ buying books for someone who makes 4X what I do, but it's for the Greater Good. ;)

Trust me on this: One day you'll wake up and realize that it no longer feels like "being strict." It just feels GOOD. :)

I think it's interesting that they don't seem to want to know...maybe afraid it would take too much time and time is money. I'm thinking of sending him a copy of MWL...I always get my books used from Amazon...gotta stretch that social security!

Gypsy--that is fantastic you are very close to being healed from our culturally induced chronic illnesses. I hope all of us can stick to choosing health over instant gratification and hopefully that will go a long way to keeping us healthy and active in our older years.

Since July 2010 when I've gone to the doctor, and as he sees good things come about, I share a little at a time regarding my new habits. He didn't have to tell me to take that "daily aspirin" the last visit; all numbers were looking better. Now when I'm closer to maintaining I may just come on strong and share all the information and books and swear by it since I'll be that proof, too.

Best of health to you!

Regarding cholesterol...there wasn't much change in April, but I need to have it repeated since it's been 7 months.

I first posted this April 13 and am surprised that it's still being read  So I thought I'd try to post the labs but please forgive if I'm not good with columns of numbers
1/26/11 Cholesterol 200.3mg/dl
4/08/11 201.6
Range 0.0 - 200.0

1/26/11 Triglycerides 106.3 mg/dl
4/08/ll 136.3
Range 30.0 - 150.0

1/26/11 HDL 47.5mg/dl
4/08/11 41.6
Range 45.0 - 90.0

1/26/11 Direct LDL 134.7mg/dl
4/08/11 135.2
Range 0.0 - 130.0

I confess that I never took Cholesterol seriously...had a doc in the 1980s who said he had patients who were overweight and had low readings while he had thin patients with high readings....said something to the effect that if it was high, it just meant it was in the blood and not necessarily on the walls...whatever :P
