Wondering about yoga? Try it for free

Postby victw » Mon Jan 15, 2007 6:28 pm

Got a tip on a nifty site that has full yoga classes available.

I hesitate recommending yoga without formal instruction. A good 6 weeks in a basic class with a qualified teacher - can help you learn enough to avoid injury. Yoga isn't risky - it's usually ego that gets in the way.

Anyways - if you've never tried it before - it's a nice intro.

Oh just ignore that ad at the beginning. After the ad - it's all yoga.

In what way does "ego" get in the way of safety in yoga?

I am assuming that by "ego" you mean false pride, correct?

I took yoga classes for several years. I was fortunate to share an office with a woman who was a yoga teacher.

I second your recommendation that every yoga student take at least one formal in-class yoga course from a competent teacher, preferably Hatha yoga or some equally straight-forward form. A teacher can help make sense of what needs to be done and can speed the learning process so you get the most benefit.

Hey that's pretty cool! Thanks for that link!

Our neighbor is a yoga teacher...I actually enrolled in a beginner class, but wasn't ready to get in when it started, last Monday...I'd like to maybe try again in a couple of months when there should be (I HOPE!) more time.

I never liked yoga...seems too slow for me, but I've sorta been forced into doing some lately in our p90x program, and I think I can see the benefit of opening up things and stretching out some muscles, especially after such vicissitudes as lots of office work and/or working out, etc.

This looks like a very helpful site! :)
