Health effects of coffee substitutes

Postby BlueOrange » Thu Jul 19, 2018 7:29 am

Hi Jeff,

are there any potential health risks associated with caffeine-free coffee substitutes made from roasted plants like wheat, barley, rye, chicory, lupine? Brands like Teeccino, Dandy Blend, Postum, Pero/Caro etc.

Does it make a difference if a paper filter is used instead of simply soaking and draining (e. g. french press) or using instantly dissolving products?

Thanks!

- the only potential downside, which would be minimal at worst, is the roasting creates acrylamide. If you read my recent post on coffee and acrylamides, you will see how minimal this is

- paper filtering is only recommended in regard to coffee because of the diterpenes in it, which can raise cholesterol. Those are not present in these grain beverages

- I’ve never liked them or consume them so can not comment on preparation methods
