added sugars question

Postby landog » Fri Jan 03, 2020 7:03 pm

Hi Jeff!

Happy New Year! Best wishes of the new year to you and yours!

Thanks for the update on the new nutrition labels!

My wife has a hankering for raisin bran, We were looking at ezekiel raisin bran and thought we'd calculate the percent from sugars:

Image

Calories per serving: 190. 10% of 190 = 19. Half of that is 9.5. So, say our limit of calories from sugar is 10.
8g sugar x 4 calories per gram = 32. 32 > 10. Apparently it doesn't meet the guideline.

(32 calories / 190 calories = 17% calories from sugar.)

However, the ingredients does not list any sugars. We presume that the sugar comes from the raisins. Are the raisins considered "added sugars?" Should I buy some to satisfy my wife's craving?

Thanks!

Thanks Marty!!

This is an old label so it is not clarifying whether the sugars are added or total (which could be partially or all naturally occurring). Most, if not all, are probably coming from the raisins. Here is a copy from their website

If we look at a few others they make, we get a better idea.

Here is their plain, which lists no sugars
https://www.foodforlife.com/product/cer ... ain-cereal

Here is their Almond which lists <1 gram of sugar
https://www.foodforlife.com/product/cer ... ain-cereal

So, my best guess is that most all, if not all of the 8 grams of sugar are from the raisins as it seems like that is the only difference in the two products in regard to the sugar issue. As such, it would not be counted as added sugars and would pass the guidelines.

If you were concerned at all about the sugars, the easiest thing to do is to buy the plain (which has no sugar listed) and add your own raisins (or other fruit)

Just as an FYI, these are about 1500 calories/lb

Let me know what you do and how it turns out.

Happy New Years to you and your wife!
