School Lunches

Postby openmind » Sat Feb 22, 2014 11:08 am

School lunches are what trips us up with our daughter. We pack her peanut butter sandwiches at least 2 days a week (with healthy sides like fruit), but the other days of the week it is a challenge to pack something without cheese or soy protein isolate. Any ideas anyone?

Homeschooling? Just kidding (although that is what we do)! We do however have times when my son must spend the day at an event, so we pack him a lunch.

He likes spaghetti, no roll enchiladas (http://fatfreevegan.com/blog/2010/02/23 ... nchiladas/ ... disregard the cooking spray), Chili Mac (http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2008/08/chili-mac.html), potato enchiladas, burritos, rice and beans, Jeff Novick's bean burgers, or just about anything! Susan has lots of other good recipes on the links provided above. If your daughter likes soups, a thermos of soup would be great too!

Homeschooling is a great idea, especially knowing what they serve in those cafeterias ( I wouldn't feed it to my worse enemy!)

Thank you very much, great ideas! I will give some of them a try and see how it goes.

I made the chili macaroni dish for supper. I really like this idea and I can't wait to try it on the grandkids.

I'm with you on school lunches. Our son will only have one meal per school day there this fall. I always roll my eyes when I see the big Borden truck in front of the school. Don't get me started. :\

We decided we would send a letter that he cannot have cow's milk. I can relent the other items on the plate, but the cow's milk would be EVERY lunch and that is just way too much!!

So, we say good, better, and best. I can't police it all 24/7, but I can make the best decisions for our family. Yesterday he had oatmeal, wild rice and sweet potatoes, lots of water, some popcorn for starters....he eats well at home.
