One Year Later

I've officially been McDougalling for a year now. I feel great! I've lost 35 pounds (55 all together) so far and plan to eat this way for the rest of my life. I began looking for ways to stay healthy as I approached my 40th birthday. My mom died from cancer when she was 48. Suddenly I was looking at the big four 0, I realized that I didn't want the same fate for myself. I have little little kids and a child with special needs. Mommy needs to be around for awhile. I have been very fortunate to not have any major medical issues aside from overweight.

I started at 180+ after baby #5 and began losing weight by other means before I found the McDougall site. I've gone from Obese to Normal in the BMI ranges. I was so unhappy eating SAD foods. My stomach was always mildly uncomfortable. I could feel undigested food in my gut when I woke up in the morning. I would get indigestion with that nasty taste in my mouth. I was alway hungry eating to lose weight by other weight loss programs. I failed at many of those plans. I lost hair and sleep. I was emotionally unstable. I resorted to fasting which came with uncontrolled eating after the fast.

I haven't followed the entire time in a perfect way. I've suffered McDougall's revenge at least on one occasion. I've faced ridicule and ignorant food advice. I've been stared at and coaxed, worried about and had eyes rolled at. I've had mental health problems at the food court when I was hungry and there wasn't a single vegetable suitable for consumption. I learned how to be humble and let my success speak for itself. I learned how to change the subject. I really like the food I'm eating. I look forward to eating "my" foods. I taught my children a better way.

There are many many success stories here. Mine is just one of hundreds and not the most sensational. Still it is a victory not just for me but for my whole family and hopefully for my grandchildren.

Thank You Dr. McDougall from the bottom of my healthy heart!

I can't wait to see your "After" photo. What a cute before photo with your child! I especially enjoyed your comments about trying to find vegetables or other vegan food at the Food Courts. I had a similar experience in a fishing village while on a weekend vacation about a month ago. It's weird what America is eating isn't it? You're doing great. Thanks so much for posting and sharing your story up to this point!
