Elite athletes must push their bodies to these extremes or you can not compete with the other elite athletes who do. IOW, you will lose if you don't. The sport demands it. It is probably unhealthy to do this to our bodies tho over a long period of time. Chronic injuries can end in a lifetime of chronic pain long after you stop the excessive exercise. Legendary bodybuilder Ronnie Coleman destroyed his body in pursuit of those Mr. Olympians. It ain't worth it IMO.

Before destroying his body.

After destroying his body. (and he still lifts doing further damage---crazy).
