Blood Sugar Targets and Testing Frequency:

ADA Targets: A1C below 7%, pre-meal BS 80-130 mg/dL, post-meal BS < 180 mg/dL. Testing: Pre-meal, post-meal. 4-10+ times per day.
McDougall Targets: Fasting BS 150-300 mg/dL. No A1C target. Testing: Once daily fasting. 1 test per day unless hypoglycemia suspected.

Diet:

ADA: Individualized meal planning approach focused on carb counting/control, lean meats, lower fat.
McDougall: Whole food plant-based diet, high carb from starchy foods, very low fat. No carb counting.

Medications:

ADA: Use metformin and other medications as needed to reach targets.
McDougall: Stop oral medications, minimize insulin, focus on diet and lifestyle changes rather than medications.
